In a significant move to bolster defense cooperation, India and the United States have signed a landmark 10-year Defense Cooperation Framework Agreement in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The pact was formalized on Friday during a bilateral meeting between Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting.
The new agreement, announced by Secretary Hegseth on X (formerly Twitter), aims to enhance strategic coordination between New Delhi and Washington across defense technology, intelligence sharing, and joint operational capability. Hegseth described the pact as a “critical step toward ensuring regional stability and strengthening deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.”
Strengthening Military Cooperation
According to Hegseth, the India-US Defense Agreement will create a structured framework for collaboration in military infrastructure, defense manufacturing, and technology transfer. It also emphasizes closer cooperation between defense industries and intelligence agencies of both nations, signaling a new phase in the strategic partnership that has deepened steadily over the past decade.
Indian defense officials confirmed that discussions in Kuala Lumpur covered a range of pressing defense issues, including delays in the GE Aerospace F404 engine supply for India’s indigenous Tejas fighter jet program. The delay has impacted delivery schedules for the Indian Air Force, forcing Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to reschedule aircraft production timelines.
Addressing Trade and Tariff Concerns
The defense pact comes amid ongoing trade and tariff tensions between India and the US. Despite differences on several economic fronts, both sides have continued to expand their military and strategic cooperation. Analysts view this agreement as an indicator that defense collaboration remains a top priority for both governments, even in the face of commercial friction.
